Around 2500 years back, a young ascetic, Siddhartha set his foot in Bodh Gaya in search of true knowledge, looking for enlightenment. After meditating under a peepal tree for a long time, Siddharth Gautam attained enlightenment and became Bodhi Sattva or the Enlightened one. Marking this holy place, Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya holds a special importance among the Buddhists. The descendant of the Mahabodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment is located within the campus of this temple. Being an important center for Buddhism, this place has monasteries built by many other Asian countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, Japan, etc. Several courses on Buddhism are taught in these monasteries. Located just 110 kilometres from the capital city of Patna, this is a perfect place to meditate and attain tranquil and peace, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
