Previous Next Gaya is believed to be named after the demon Gayasur who after practising severe penance had received a boon from Lord Vishnu after which his body became pious. Gaya finds mention in the Hindu epic Ramayana and Mahabharat. It is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus for performing Pinddaan of their ancestors.
