Gaya is believed to be named after the demon Gayasur who after practising severe penance had received a boon from Lord Vishnu after which his body became pious. Gaya finds mention in the Hindu epic Ramayana and Mahabharat. It is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus for performing Pinddaan of their ancestors. Hindus from all over the world come to Vishnupad temple for performing Pinddaan. Mangla Gauri is another famous pilgrimage site for the Hindus as it is one of the eighteen Shaktipeeths of Goddess Sati. Bodh Gaya, the centre for Buddha’s enlightenment is located just 15 km away from Gaya.
